Challenge

Connecting Two Cities Separated by Desert

Muscat and Salalah are over 1,000 kilometres apart, separated by Oman’s vast desert interior. During the annual Khareef season, large numbers of visitors travel south to experience Salalah’s cooler climate — yet the two cities remain worlds apart in terms of daily connection. Bank Muscat wanted to bring both communities together in a meaningful, public-facing way.

  • Geographic distance of over 1,000 km between Oman’s two major population centres
  • No existing public installation connecting citizens in real time across the country
  • A need for an experience that felt genuine, spontaneous, and accessible to all
Solution

A Live Portal Between Two Cities

In partnership with Mubashir Technology, Bank Muscat deployed Video Window to create a persistent, always-on video portal — one screen at Mall of Oman in Muscat, and a corresponding screen at Attin Square in Salalah. Anyone could walk up and interact with someone on the other side of the country, live and in real time.

  • A continuous, real-time video link between Muscat and Salalah running throughout the day
  • A public-facing experience requiring no logins, apps, or setup from participants
  • The first city portal installation of its kind anywhere in the region

“Visitors reacted with surprise and delight — waving, dancing, and holding up signs for the camera. Some in Muscat’s summer heat were visibly envious of the cooler Khareef weather on the other side of the screen.”

Bank Muscat — Muscat–Salalah Portal Launch, July 2026
What the Installation Achieved
Genuine human connection at scale — families, children, and strangers across 1,000 km waved, laughed, and interacted spontaneously through the live portal. A landmark first for the region — the first installation of its kind in Oman, placing Bank Muscat at the forefront of experiential, tech-driven community engagement. Strong community resonance, with clips shared widely on social media capturing the public’s genuine surprise and delight at the experience.

What Made This Possible

  • Always-On Live Feed: A persistent, continuous video connection running throughout the day — no scheduling, no interruptions, no friction for participants
  • Public-Ready Simplicity: Anyone could walk up and interact immediately — no app, no login, no instructions needed
  • City Portal Technology: Inspired by global installations connecting cities like Dublin, Vilnius, and Manila — now brought to Oman for the first time

Timed for Khareef Season

The installation ran from 22 July to 17 August 2026, coinciding with the peak of Salalah’s Khareef tourist season — when the south of Oman draws large numbers of visitors from Muscat and beyond, making the connection particularly meaningful to the public.

As Oman’s largest bank by assets with more than 170 branches nationwide, Bank Muscat used the portal to reinforce its “Better Everyday” brand promise through an experience that resonated directly with local communities.
